AZ-800 and AZ-801 Become One Exam. Meet AZ-802
Microsoft is consolidating AZ-800 and AZ-801 into a single exam, AZ-802, for the Windows Server Administrator Associate certification. The beta ran in July 2026 with training and the live exam expected in August.
Two exams becoming one is unusually good news, so it is worth understanding who benefits and who needs to move quickly.
What is changing
The old structure required both AZ-800, Administering Windows Server Hybrid Core Infrastructure, and AZ-801, Configuring Windows Server Hybrid Advanced Services. Two sittings, two fees, two blueprints.
AZ-802 combines the hybrid infrastructure tracks into one credential validating skills across both Azure and on-premises environments. Same certification name, single exam.
If you have passed neither
Wait for AZ-802. You halve the number of exams and the cost. There is no advantage to starting a two-exam path that is being replaced.
If you have passed AZ-800 but not AZ-801
This is the awkward position. Check Microsoft's transition guidance carefully, because whether a single completed exam carries credit toward the consolidated credential is the detail that matters most to you, and it varies by how Microsoft structures each consolidation.
If it does not carry credit, you face a choice between finishing AZ-801 before it retires or writing off the AZ-800 attempt and sitting AZ-802 fresh. Get the retirement date for AZ-801 confirmed before you decide.
If you hold the full certification already
Nothing to do. Your credential stays on your transcript and renews annually as normal.
Is Windows Server certification still worth it in 2026?
A fair question given how much of this year's Microsoft news is about AI.
The case for yes: an enormous amount of enterprise infrastructure still runs on Windows Server, hybrid environments are the norm rather than a transition state, and the skill is not going anywhere. Roles in government, healthcare, manufacturing and mid-market IT still ask for it directly.
The case for caution: it is not where hiring growth is. If you are early in your career and choosing one certification, AZ-104 opens more doors than a server administration credential, and it overlaps meaningfully.
The sensible read is that Windows Server certification is maintenance rather than advancement. Valuable if you already work in that world, not the thing that changes your trajectory.
The pattern worth noticing
Consolidation and AI-focused replacement are happening simultaneously across Microsoft's catalogue this year. Traditional infrastructure credentials are being simplified and streamlined, while the new exam families all point at AI. That tells you where Microsoft expects the growth to be, whether or not you agree.
