Microsoft's New AB Series Explained: The AI Certification Track
If you have looked at Microsoft's certification catalogue recently you will have noticed exam codes starting with AB. They are new, they are multiplying quickly, and Microsoft has not done a great job of explaining how they fit alongside the AZ, SC, PL and MS families.
What AB means
The AB series covers agentic AI and AI-powered business applications. Where the older families were organised by product area, Azure for AZ, security for SC, Power Platform for PL, the AB series is organised around building and running AI agents and AI-driven business solutions.
Several of the AB exams are direct replacements for retiring credentials. AB-410 replaces PL-200 when it retires on 31 August 2026. AB-210 succeeds MB-280. AB-100 is where Microsoft is steering solution architects whose Dynamics and Power Platform certifications have no one-to-one successor.
The ones you can start with now
Three AB exams are worth knowing about if you are planning a path rather than replacing a retiring credential.
- AB-900 sits at fundamentals level. If you want an entry point into the AI side of the Microsoft stack without committing to a role-based associate exam, this is it. Microsoft has positioned it as the replacement entry point now that AI-900 is retiring.
- AB-730 and AB-731 go deeper into building with AI in the business applications context.
Should you actually take one?
Be honest about your situation before adding a new credential.
Yes, if your certification is being retired and AB is the named successor. AB-410 for PL-200 holders is the clearest case.
Yes, if your role is genuinely moving toward agent building. The demand signal here is real, and being early on a new credential carries more weight than being late on an established one.
Not yet, if you are still building core infrastructure or security skills. AZ-104 and SC-200 remain more widely requested in job postings than anything in the AB family, and they will be for a while yet.
The thing to watch
New certification families carry a specific risk: the blueprint moves. AB exams launched in 2026 will almost certainly be revised as Microsoft's AI tooling changes, and it changes constantly. That is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to sit the exam reasonably soon after you start studying rather than preparing for six months against a moving target.
Check the exam code on Microsoft's site before you buy any study material. In a year like this one, that habit will save you.
