AI-102 Is Gone. What Changed in AI-103, and Does Your Study Still Count?
AI-102, Azure AI Engineer Associate, has been replaced by AI-103, Azure AI App and Agent Developer Associate. Microsoft describes it as the closest one-to-one swap among this year's changes, which is true relative to the others but still undersells how much moved.
What was dropped
AI-102 was built around deploying pre-built Azure AI services. Computer Vision, Language Understanding, Azure Bot Service, and the rest of what used to be called Cognitive Services. A large part of the exam tested whether you could wire those services together correctly.
AI-103 drops most of that legacy content. If your preparation was heavy on Cognitive Services configuration, a meaningful chunk of it is no longer examined.
What replaced it
The new syllabus centres on building generative AI applications and orchestrating multiple agents. Expect substantial coverage of:
- Azure AI Foundry as the primary development surface
- Agentic architectures, including multi-step reasoning workflows
- Semantic Kernel and orchestration patterns
- Production deployment of agents, not just prototypes
The shift is from integrating AI services into an application to building applications where the AI is the application.
Does your AI-102 study still count?
Partly. The foundational material transfers: how Azure resources are provisioned and secured, how you handle keys and endpoints, responsible AI principles, and general Azure fluency. That is maybe a third of what you needed.
The service-specific knowledge largely does not transfer. If you memorised the configuration surface of individual Cognitive Services, that time is spent.
The honest advice: treat AI-103 as a new exam that you have a head start on, not as a refresh you can pass on existing notes.
If you already hold AI-102
Your certification remains valid on your transcript until it expires, and you renew through the normal annual process rather than by retaking. Retirement affects new attempts, not existing credentials.
Is AI-103 worth taking?
If you build software on Azure, probably yes, and sooner rather than later. With AZ-204 now retired with no direct successor, AI-103 is the closest thing Microsoft offers to a developer credential, and it sits in the area where hiring demand is clearly concentrated.
If your work is infrastructure or security rather than application development, it is less urgent. AZ-104 or the SC family will serve you better.
One practical warning
AI tooling moves faster than certification blueprints. Azure AI Foundry today is not what it was six months ago. Verify the current exam objectives on Microsoft's site before you buy anything, and be wary of study material written before mid-2026.
