AZ-204 Retired on 31 July. Here Is What Azure Developers Do Next
As of 31 July 2026, the AZ-204 exam and the Azure Developer Associate certification are retired. If you were studying for it, that window has closed.
The complication is that Microsoft has not announced a straight one-for-one successor. Unlike most of this year's retirements, there is no AZ-2xx replacement waiting.
Your certification is still valid
First, the reassuring part. If you already passed AZ-204, nothing has been taken away. A retired exam does not invalidate a credential you already hold. It stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript and remains valid until its normal expiry date. Retirement only affects new attempts.
So if you are certified, carry on. If you were mid-preparation, that is a different problem.
Why there is no direct replacement
Microsoft has spent 2026 restructuring its portfolio around AI rather than around traditional job titles. Developer content is being folded into role-based paths that treat AI integration as a baseline skill rather than a specialism.
In practice, the work AZ-204 used to validate is now spread across several newer credentials rather than concentrated in one developer exam.
Where your study transfers
- Building AI applications: AI-103, Azure AI App and Agent Developer Associate. This is where Microsoft has put its developer emphasis. It drops legacy Cognitive Services material and focuses on Azure AI Foundry, agent orchestration and production deployment. For an Azure developer heading toward AI work, this is the closest natural step.
- DevOps and delivery: AZ-400, DevOps Engineer Expert. Knowledge of app services, containers and deployment pipelines transfers almost directly. AZ-400 needs an associate-level prerequisite, so check you hold one before booking.
- Architecture: AZ-305, Azure Solutions Architect Expert. If your interest was always in how the pieces fit together rather than writing the code, this is the better direction.
If you hold no Azure certification yet
The pragmatic route is AZ-104, Azure Administrator Associate, then a specialism. AZ-104 is not a developer exam, but it is the most widely recognised Azure associate credential and it satisfies the prerequisite for the expert exams above.
Earlier in your career, AZ-900, Azure Fundamentals is still a reasonable entry point and has not been touched by this year's changes.
The wider pattern
AZ-204 is one of several exams disappearing this year. AI-102 has been replaced by AI-103, AZ-500 retires on 31 August in favour of SC-500, and AZ-800 and AZ-801 are being consolidated into AZ-802. The consistent theme is that Microsoft now treats AI capability as part of every role.
The practical lesson for anyone planning a path in 2026: check the retirement calendar before you buy study materials, not after.
