Google Cloud Changed How You Take and Renew Certifications in 2026

If you’re planning to sit a Google Cloud certification exam, the logistics changed this year — not the exam content, but how you schedule it and how you renew afterward. Here’s what’s actually different.

The Exam Delivery Switch: Kryterion to Pearson VUE

Google Cloud moved its certification exam delivery from Kryterion/Webassessor to Pearson VUE, effective late February 2026:

  • Kryterion access closed around February 23, 2026.
  • No exams could be scheduled or attempted between February 23 and March 1, 2026 — a genuine blackout window if you were planning to test during that stretch.
  • Pearson VUE scheduling opened February 26, 2026, with the first available delivery date March 2, 2026.
  • Exam content and format are unchanged — this is purely a delivery-platform switch, not a blueprint update. You still access everything through the same CM Connect login; Pearson authentication happens via SSO in the background.

Practical impact: if you were mid-study heading into late February and hadn’t scheduled yet, you’d have hit that blackout window. If you’re studying now, this is fully behind you — just be aware the check-in process for online proctored exams now includes AI-driven self-check-in rather than a human greeter, which is a minor but real change to exam-day experience.

The Bigger Change: A New Renewal Path via Google Skills

This is the one worth knowing about even if you’re not testing right now. Starting July 2026, candidates renewing Professional Cloud Architect (PCA), Professional Data Engineer (PDE), Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE), or Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) get a third renewal option beyond retaking the standard or shorter renewal exam: completing designated courses or skill badges in Google Skills.

The catch worth knowing before you plan around it: only course/badge completions in the final year of your certification’s active period count toward renewal — finishing relevant Google Skills content two years before expiration doesn’t bank credit early.

There’s also a genuinely useful early-adopter grace period: if your PCA, PDE, ACE, or CDL expired on or after January 1, 2026, or would have gone inactive through August 31, 2026, you get a one-time extension to September 1, 2026 — specifically to give you room to use the new Google Skills renewal path once it opens, rather than being forced into a standard exam retake before the option existed.

Renewal Logistics That Haven’t Changed

Some fundamentals stayed the same and are easy to mix up with what’s new:

  • Professional-level certifications remain valid for 2 years; Associate and Foundational certifications remain valid for 3 years.
  • Renewal eligibility windows are unchanged: 180 days before expiration for Foundational/Associate, 60 days before for Professional.
  • You still can’t attempt a renewal exam outside your eligibility window — early attempts get rejected and the exam fee forfeited, so don’t try to jump the line.
  • Once you pick a renewal path (standard exam vs. shorter renewal exam) for PDE or CDL, you’re locked in for that cycle — no switching mid-attempt. PCA renewal path can be switched.

Separate from the delivery/renewal changes, Google Cloud’s AI-focused certifications are evolving quickly enough that it’s worth checking currency before you commit study time:

  • Generative AI Leader (GAIL) is Google’s newest business-track AI certification, testing GenAI fundamentals, GCP AI services, and business strategy for adopting generative AI — a credential with no direct AWS or Microsoft equivalent yet.
  • Professional Machine Learning Engineer (PMLE) is undergoing a content revision to reflect the rebranded Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI, rebranded at Google Cloud Next 2026), shifting focus toward agent-building capabilities and RAG pipeline design rather than the older Vertex AI-centric blueprint.
