CompTIA Security+ SY0-801 Is Coming — Should You Wait, and What Is SecAI+ Anyway?

CompTIA has confirmed the next version of Security+ is on its way. SY0-801 has a tentative preview launch around October 20, 2026, with general availability expected roughly a month later. If you’re mid-study on SY0-701 right now, this is the “should I keep going or wait” question, and the honest answer is more nuanced than most guides let on.

What’s Actually Changing in SY0-801

The headline addition is AI, but not in a superficial way:

  • New Objective 2.4 covers Large Language Models directly — none of this existed in SY0-701 in any real form.
  • New Objective 2.6 covers AI’s role in threats and vulnerabilities — how attackers are already using AI-generated phishing, deepfakes, and automated reconnaissance.
  • Domain 2 is being renamed from a generic threats title to “Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Attacks”, signaling a sharper focus on real attack techniques over abstract theory.
  • Domain 3 keeps its cloud and hybrid focus but updates the specific technologies tested — more SASE, SD-WAN, container security, and CSPM tooling, reflecting how security teams actually deploy controls in 2026 versus 2023.
  • The five-domain structure stays the same. This isn’t a ground-up rebuild like some other 2026 exam overhauls — it’s a significant refresh, not a different exam.

Is SY0-801 the Same as SecAI+? No — and This Trips People Up

CompTIA already launched a separate AI-focused certification, SecAI+ (exam code CY0-001), back in February 2026. It’s easy to assume SY0-801 makes SecAI+ redundant. It doesn’t.

The difference is depth, not just topic overlap:

  • Security+ SY0-801 teaches you to recognize AI-related risk and apply standard security principles to AI systems. It’s general-practitioner level.
  • SecAI+ goes deep into adversarial machine learning, model gateway design, prompt injection defense, and MLOps security — the actual technical mechanics of defending AI infrastructure. Roughly 40% of the SecAI+ exam is specifically about securing AI systems at an implementation level.

CompTIA designed SecAI+ to stack on top of Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+ rather than replace any of them — it assumes you already have security fundamentals and adds AI-specific depth on top. If your job touches AI security work directly (model deployment, LLM-integrated products, AI governance), SecAI+ is the more relevant credential. If you’re building general security fundamentals, Security+ is still the one that matters first.

Should You Take SY0-701 Now or Wait for SY0-801?

Run the numbers, not the hype:

Take SY0-701 now if:

  • You already have a study date, voucher, or momentum going. Every Security+ certification is valid for three years from your test date regardless of exam version — a 701 passed today is worth exactly as much to employers as an 801 passed next year.
  • Your target role is DoD/federal (8140 workforce framework), where the credential itself is what’s approved, not a specific exam code.
  • You’re worried about difficulty. SY0-701 is a known quantity with years of mature, well-tested study material. New exam versions historically get harder, not easier — more performance-based questions, tighter scoring, more scenario depth. SY0-601 was seen as noticeably easier than SY0-701 across the board.

Wait for SY0-801 if:

  • You haven’t started serious prep yet and won’t be exam-ready before the version cutover anyway.
  • Your role is already moving toward AI-adjacent security work, and you’d rather study the content once in its current form.
  • You’re specifically interested in eventually stacking SecAI+ on top — studying SY0-801’s AI objectives first gives you a smoother on-ramp.

What Happens to SY0-701 When 801 Launches

Nothing changes for certifications already earned. CompTIA typically keeps the outgoing exam version live for about six months after the new one reaches general availability, so expect SY0-701 to remain sittable into mid-2027. Your existing SY0-701 (or one you pass between now and then) stays valid for its full three-year term no matter what version is current when it expires.

Bottom Line

For most people currently studying, the math favors finishing SY0-701 now rather than waiting on a moving target. If you’re just starting from zero and have months of prep ahead of you regardless, it’s reasonable to aim for SY0-801 directly. Either way, don’t confuse SY0-801 with SecAI+ — they solve different problems, and increasingly, serious security careers will want both.
