Every Vendor Is Adding AI to Its Certifications. Does It Change Your Path?
Look at 2026 across the certification industry and one pattern is impossible to miss. Microsoft is retiring fifteen-plus exams and replacing them with AI-focused successors. AWS rebuilt its programme around AI. Cisco added AI to the CCIE lab. ISACA launched AAISM for AI security leadership. CompTIA introduced SecAI+.
The obvious conclusion is that you need an AI certification. The obvious conclusion is mostly wrong, and it is worth being precise about why.
What actually changed
Two different things are happening and they are easy to confuse.
AI added to existing roles. SC-500 is AZ-500 plus AI workload security. AI-103 is a developer exam where the applications happen to be agents. This is not a new career path, it is the same job with new tools in it.
Genuinely new AI-specialist credentials. AAISM, SecAI+ CY0-001, AWS AI Practitioner. These target roles that mostly did not exist three years ago.
The first category affects almost everyone in IT. The second affects a much smaller number of people, and the marketing does not distinguish between them.
What to do if you are early in your career
Ignore the AI credentials for now. Security+, Network+, AZ-104 and AWS Solutions Architect Associate are still what job postings ask for, by a wide margin.
An AI certification without foundational skills is a credential nobody hires on. The AI content will reach you anyway, because it is being folded into the exams you were going to take regardless.
What to do if you are mid-career
Take the AI-inclusive version of the credential you were going to renew anyway. If your AZ-500 is expiring, SC-500 is the natural next step and it happens to include AI security. That is the cheapest possible way to acquire the AI line on your CV.
Do not add a separate AI certification on top unless your actual work involves it. A credential you cannot speak to in an interview is a liability.
What to do if AI is genuinely your work
Then the specialist credentials are worth it, and being early carries weight. A 2026-dated AI security credential says something a 2029-dated one will not.
AAISM for governance and leadership, SecAI+ for hands-on security, AI-103 for building. Pick by what you do, not by what sounds most advanced.
The uncomfortable part
Certification bodies make money when their catalogue churns. A wave of new exams is partly a genuine response to a changing industry and partly a commercial event. Both things are true simultaneously.
The way to tell them apart is to read job postings in your market rather than vendor announcements. If employers near you are asking for AI credentials, that is signal. If only vendors are talking about them, wait.
Certifications follow hiring demand. They do not create it.
